Point-of-sale systems
Whether at a staffed checkout lane, a self-checkout lane, or on other devices in the store, our point-of-sale software is used at thousands of touchpoints every day. No matter where it’s used, it ensures a reliable and intuitive shopping experience.
The technology
Since 2023, we have been driving the development of the new checkout platform and the associated back-office systems. This enables us to support the processing of purchases, the integration of self-checkout registers, and processes such as billing, financial accounting and other back-office applications.
A particular focus is on a consistent user experience.
No matter which payment method is chosen, customers and employees experience a consistent user interface across all touchpoints.
Numbers, data, facts
The challenge: Many requirements, one system
The checkout experience determines how easily and quickly customers can complete their purchases. Behind the scenes, this involves a complex interplay of point-of-sale solutions, payment methods, customer cards, loyalty programs, gift cards and external IT systems. All components must work together reliably in real time, whether at staffed registers or at self-service stations.
The various weighing systems in the store must also be integrated, from the counter scales in the meat, cheese, or deli sections to the produce scales. For employees, intuitive operation is key. Stores need stable processes that reliably connect the checkout, payment transactions and back-office operations.
What is needed, therefore, is a flexible solution that works on a variety of hardware, can be continuously developed and supports common standards across all stores.
Our contribution
The new point-of-sale software integrates cash registers, self-checkout, payment methods and back-office applications on a common technological and functional foundation. This allows processes to work together more seamlessly and ensures that information is available more quickly where it is needed.
Modern interfaces enable use on various devices, integrate the solution into existing system landscapes and facilitate the introduction of new features. Common standards and the modular architecture ensure stability, flexibility and easy further development.
Store employees benefit from standardized processes and intuitive operation. In the future, shared product codes and backend systems will facilitate a more efficient exchange of information and faster data processing.
This creates a point-of-sale landscape that supports customers, employees and stores alike.
Reliable in action
Instead of a rigid, monolithic system, the point-of-sale software relies on a modular architecture. This allows new features and integrations to be implemented quickly and existing applications to be continuously enhanced.
At the same time, we are establishing a common technological standard within the REWE GROUP and ensuring a consistent user experience across various applications. The flexible platform grows with the evolving needs of the retail industry and lays the foundation for future expansions and innovations.
Its high level of adaptability and continuous development make the checkout platform a key building block for the future of retail.
